Some of the more than 228 million eggs recalled after the Iowa producer reported finding salmonella had been sold in Eastern Iowa.
Wright County Egg Farm in Galt, in west central Iowa, one of the nation's largest egg producers, announced Tuesday that it was recalling the eggs after some had been linked to salmonella poisoning in Colorado, California and Minnesota.
The packaged eggs have been sold under the following brands: Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph's, Boomsma's, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms and Kemps. They are packed in varying sizes of cartons and were distributed between May 16 and August 13.
The cartons came from plant numbers 1026, 1413 and 1946, and Julian dates and codes can be found stamped on the carton like this: P-1946 223. Julian dates ranging from 136 to 225 are included in the recall.
Steve Kieffer, corporate risk manager for Fareway Stores, Inc., in Boone, confirmed that many of the Fareway stores in Iowa do carry the Boomsma brand of eggs. He said he wasn't sure how many stores were affected, but said the distributor alerted company officials to the problem on Friday and eggs were immediately pulled from the shelves.
“Every store may or may not have them, it just depends on their ordering patterns,” Kieffer said. There are 91 Fareway stores in Iowa.
“We want to immediately take care of the consumer,” he said. “Consumers who bring the eggs in will get a refund.”
Store representatives from food retailers Hy-Vee, Wal-Mart and Target have said Wednesday that none of those stores carried any of the contaminated brands.
These Boomsma eggs were purchased at a Fareway store in Eastern Iowa and match the plant and date numbers of those affected.
