Baseball isn't the only sport at Veterans Memorial Stadium this summer. The Kernels will also host volkssporters from all across the United States.
For the first time ever, the American Volkssport Association Convention is being held in the state of Iowa.
Not familiar with volkswalking?
Originated in Europe, a volkswalk is a 5- or 10-kilometer (3.1 or 6.2 miles) noncompetitive walk that is performed at each walker's own pace.
It is not a race. Instead, it is seen as a fun activity that can be performed individually or in a group, either simply to promote a healthy lifestyle or as a way to see the various sights along the trail.
The 2011 American Volksporters Walk spans 11 different Iowa communities and takes place from June 18-26, starting in Council Bluffs.
The Cedar Rapids portion of the walk occurs on June 25, starting at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The route will take volkssporters through the Czech Village, downtown and past several museums, and to Brucemore and Washington High School.
Each walk is open to the public. Other cities participating in the volkswalk include Des Moines, Ames, Clear Lake, Mason City, Winterset, and the Quad Cities.
