Struve, Roger Dean
Roger Dean Struve, 65, passed away peacefully at Lucas County Health Center in Chariton on June 14, 2011, with family by his side. Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, June 18, at First United Methodist Church, Chariton. Graveside services will follow at 3:30 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
He was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Jan. 28, 1946, to Wilfrid and Ruth (Schump) Struve. He graduated from Cedar Rapids Washington High School in 1964 and went on to graduate from the University of Iowa in 1969, with a BBA accounting degree. He married Becky Sue Fisher of Waterloo on June 16, 1967. He worked as a Certified Public Accountant at Ernst and Young for 18 years, then went on to work as an executive at various banks, retiring from Great Western Bank in 2004. They moved to Chariton in August 2000.
Roger was an active member in the community and at First United Methodist Church of Chariton. He was involved over the years in United Way, Boys and Girls Club, Jacyees, Rotary, Masons, church boards/committees and Eastern Star. He was on the Lucas County Health Center Board and the SCIC Foundation of Lucas County Board. He loved to travel both with his wife Becky and grandchildren all over the United States. He was actively involved in sports that the grandchildren played by attending games and going to tournaments. He was a lifelong Hawkeye, Cubs, Bears and Bulls fan.
He is survived by his wife, Becky; and their children: Angela (Mike) Vaupel of Overland Park, Kan., and their children, Amanda, David and Elizabeth; Brian Struve of Chariton and his children, Tyler, Eric and Jacqueline; and Cathe (Jeff) Franz of Iowa City and their children, Andrew and Nile. He is also survived by his mother, Ruth (Schump) Struve of Cedar Rapids; his brother, James (Sandy) Struve of Las Vegas, Nev.; sisters-in-law, Mary (Spencer) Snyder and Sandra (Jay) Watt, both of Chariton; his brother-in-law, Larry (Marilyn) Fisher of Dunkerton; and several cousins, nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his father, Wilfrid.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to SCIC Foundation, Legacy Lodge, Chariton Girls Softball, Olathe Girls Softball Association or Iowa City Community School District Orchestra Program.
