Surgery patient ushered fire victims to safety

When a fire broke out at Oak Hill Manor on Oct. 26, Vicki Heeren had just left the hospital after some minor surgery. She was going to her mother's apartment when she saw smoke coming from an apartment. She hurried into the building and pulled the fire alarm and began pounding on everyone's door. A lot of elderly people were napping and didn't hear the alarm but she kept banging on doors and yelling “fire.”
One lady, on oxygen, was way down at the other end of the hall and the smoke was very thick. Vicki, who has respiratory problems, ran through the smoke and got her out the back door and over to the office.
We at Oakhill Manor thank Vicki for alerting us and getting us to safety.
