Roger Gene Pals, 86, of Manchester, died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2014, at Community Congregational Church, Manchester. The family will greet friends from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, 2014, at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Manchester, and again from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church on Tuesday. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery, Manchester.
Roger was born March 11, 1928, in Belmond, Iowa, the son of Andrew and Rena (Mennenga) Pals. He attended school near Belmond and graduated from Belmond High School in 1945. Roger served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1948 aboard the USS Achenar. Roger attended Drake, the University of Idaho, Moscow, North Illinois University in Dekalb, and graduated from Iowa State Teachers College (now known as UNI). He taught in Fayette from 1951 to 1952, Manchester Junior High from 1952 to 1960, in Safford, Ariz., from 1960 to 1961 and returned to Manchester in 1961 until retiring in 1987.
Roger was a member of the Community Congregational Church in Manchester where he held various offices. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan and enjoyed playing cards with the boys.
Roger is survived by three children, Steven (Laura) Pals of Thornton, Colo.,, Eric (Karen) Pals of Sherman Oaks, Calif., and Gail Pals of Surprise, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Stephanie (Jason Davis) Pals, Samara Pals and Amanda Gossel; and great-granddaughters, Kaydin Pals and Jaeden Davis.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Rena Pals; and by his sister, Evelyn Gaetzke.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established in Roger's memory.
