DuWayne Edward Schirm, 92, of Dysart, passed away peacefully from a courageous battle with leukemia on Jan. 21, 2014, in Iowa City. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at St. Mark Lutheran Church in
Garrison, with Pastor Mark Leckband officiating. Interment will be at the Keystone Cemetery. Friends may call at Phillips Funeral Home in Keystone from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday.
DuWayne was born Aug. 8, 1921, near Newhall to Lewis and Agnes Hegewald Schirm. He attended school at Newhall until the family moved to a farm southwest of Garrison in 1934. DuWayne was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church and graduated in 1938 from Garrison High School. After graduation he worked on the family farm. On June 10, 1945, he was united in marriage to Lillian Rose Meyer at the Keystone Lutheran Church. He farmed south of La Porte City for several years and moved to a farm southwest of Garrison, where he resided until his death.
He was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Garrison, where he served on various church boards. He was a member of the Keystone Telephone Co., and he and his wife read meters for the REC. He also served on the Garrison school board.
DuWayne was an avid fisherman and enjoyed his time on the lake with his family and friends in Minnesota and Canada. He loved sports, especially the Cubs, and played on the Schirm baseball team.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian, of 68 years; his son, Steve (Marcia) of Lake Placid, Fla.; his daughters, Rita (Steve) Blake, Dixie Dethlefs and Lori Wilken, all of Waterloo; his sister, Lois Flickinger of La Porte City; his brother, David (Janice) Schirm of Vinton; his sister-in-law, Carol Schirm of Waterloo; his grandchildren, Reggie Schirm, Andrea Arneson, Stephanie (Jason Gomez) Blake-Gomez, Megan (Don) Tjernagel, Alison Blake, Angela (Matthew Trettin) Dethlefs-Trettin, Dustin (Carly) Dethlefs and Paige and Kaitlyn Wilken; stepgrand-children, Rocky (Patty) Timmer and Rhonda Lorenz; great-grandchildren, Jordyn, Jalynn, Jaryn, Jaynason and Jacyn Gomez, Henry and Ainsley Trettin, Pearson Dethlefs and Nicole Timmer; stepgreat-grandchildren, Krystle and Corey Lorenz; stepgreat-great-grand-children, Malia and Sabastian Lorenz; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Jodi; and his brother, Richard Schirm.
A memorial fund has been established at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Garrison.
