MEYER NAMED BIG TEN SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa freshman place kicker Mike Meyer has been named the Big Ten's Special Teams Player of the Week following Iowa's 18-13 road win over Indiana last Saturday. The announcement was made by the Big Ten office today.
Meyer, a 6-2, 175-pound true freshman from Dubuque, IA, connected on four field goals. His kicks included a career-long 42-yarder, to account for 12 points in Iowa's win last weekend. The Wahlert graduate booted field goals of 23, 27 and 27 yards before hitting the 42-yarder early in the fourth quarter to pull the Hawkeyes within one (13-12). Iowa would later score its only touchdown of the game for the victory. Meyer picked up the first weekly laurel of his career.
Meyer became the first Iowa freshman kicker to boot four field goals in a game since Nate Kaeding did it in a double overtime win (26-23) over Penn State in 2000.
Meyer is the sixth Iowa player to earn the weekly league honor this year. Earlier this season running back Paki O'Meara won the special team award for his play against Eastern Illinois, defensive tackle Mike Daniels won the defensive honor against Ball State, defensive end Adrian Clayborn was named defensive Player of the Week for his play against Penn State, quarterback Ricky Stanzi for his play against Michigan and Shaun Prater for his performance against Michigan State.
Iowa had eight players named Big Ten Players of the Week last year (four on defense, one offense and three special teams).
Iowa kicker Mike Meyer (96) kicks a field goal against Michigan State in the first quarter of their game on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010, at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City. (Liz Martin/SourceMedia Group News)
