CEDAR RAPIDS -- Somebody brought these kids up well.
They certainly learned, somewhere along the line, how to share.
Class 4A top-ranked Linn-Mar placed all five starters in double figures in an 80-55 Mississippi Valley Conference boys' basketball pasting of No. 10 Cedar Rapids Washington in front of a nearly full gym that featured North Carolina Coach Roy Williams Friday night at Washington High School.
"It's good to see everyone produce equally," said Marcus Paige, who has committed with Williams and will play for UNC beginning in 2012-13. "We knew if our big (guys) played well, we would have a big advantage."
They did, and they did.
Linn-Mar (11-0 overall, 7-0 MVC) scored on its first six possessions of the game and led from start to finish. The Lions were at full throttle in the third quarter, when they sank 10 of 12 shots and blew it open. The largest margin was 28 points (72-44) with 5:10 to play.
"Everybody was feeling it," said Linn-Mar's Josh Montague. "We knew (Washington) was kind of undersized in the post. We just worked hard in there."
So here's that balance: Paige scored 19, Matt Bohannon added 16, Montague tallied 13, Shane Benton and Ian McBrayer 12 apiece.
"They did a great job sharing the ball," said Linn-Mar Coach Chris Robertson. "Everybody was active, and that's what it takes."
Linn-Mar went five minutes before its first empty possession of the game, and led 14-6 by then. It was 20-10 after a quarter, 35-22 after a half.
Then came the third quarter, a 25-point scoring spree.
"We played our worst game of the year," said Washington's Josh Oglesby, an Iowa recruit who scored 20 points but was held to 6-of-18 shooting from the floor -- 1 of 9 from long range. "We didn't execute. We just didn't get it done."
Linn-Mar certainly did. The Lions shot 55 percent (28 of 51) from the field, including 10 of 17 from 3-point range. They had only nine turnovers, and three of those came in the final two minutes.
Wes Washpun added 14 points for the Warriors (7-4, 5-2).
