Glass, Edgewood drivers to face lane closures

CEDAR RAPIDS — Drivers already coping with road construction in the area of Edgewood Road NE and Highway 100 now will have to be even more patient.
Two projects are underway that affect traffic on Edgewood and Glass Road NE.
First, the city of Cedar Rapids is beginning a major reconstruction project on Glass between Edgewood and Wenig Road NE. During the month the project is expected to take, drivers will be able to go only westbound on Glass Road NE in the area. Eastbound traffic must detour to 42nd Street NE or another east-west route.
Drivers going farther north to catch Highway 100, though, need to be prepared for intermittent lane closures over the next two weeks.
The Iowa Department of Transportation said up to four 10-minute intermittent lane closures will occur on northbound Edgewood between North River Boulevard and the north end of the west detour at Highway 100.
The closings, planned between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and also after 6 p.m., are needed to bring bridge beams to the site of a new Edgewood Road bridge from Blairs Ferry Road.
IDOT is constructing the bridge over what eventually will be the Highway 100 extension. After the northbound half of the bridge is built, traffic on the west detour will be moved back onto Edgewood Road and the new bridge.
The DOT is also doing work on the raised medians on Edgewood in the area — until April 10 on the south side of Highway 100 by the Transamerica campus; and between April 13 and 24 on North River Boulevard NE on the west side of Edgewood Road NE.
