Miller, Donald E.
Donald E. Miller, 76, of Cedar Rapids passed away Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, at St. Luke's Hospital. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Lovely Lane United Methodist Church with Pastor Paul Wilcox officiating.
Donald Eugene Miller was born on a farm on June 22, 1936, to Louie and Dorotha Knuth Miller in Hedrick, Iowa. He graduated from Hedrick High School in 1954. He was married to Marilyn Swanson and to this union four children were born. They later divorced. Don played football at Parsons College where he graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree. He taught school in Newton and went on to get a Master's Degree in Science and Chemistry from University of Northern Iowa. Don moved to Cedar Rapids after teaching school in Fort Dodge. He became a manager at World Book Encyclopedia. Don was united in marriage to Barbara (Myers) Waterhouse in May 1984. He started at Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1985 in Davenport. Following his graduation in 1988 from Palmer College, he began his own practice in Hiawatha in January 1989. He sold his practice to Dr. Berry, but continued to work there until his passing.
Through the years he had been president of the Cedar Rapids Chiropractic Society, Antique Automobile Club of America and Model A Restorers Club. Don enjoyed all of the outdoor activities with his family including boating, fishing, snowmobiling and ATVs. He liked spending time at his cabin on the Wapsi. Don was a long time member of the Lovely Lane United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara; children, Donna (Tim) Thomas of Greenville, S.C., Alan (Pam) Miller of South Lake Tahoe, Calif., Gayle (Charlie) Hinman of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and Jay (Christine) Miller of Hammond, La.; stepchild, Dean (Jill) Waterhouse of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Kayla, Rhianna, Carly, Alana and Elizabeth; stepgrandchildren, Justin, Ryan, Nick, Nathan, Alissa, Kaylee and Emily; mother, Dorotha Bartman of Marion; siblings, Max Miller of Dallas, Texas and Glen (Linda) Miller of Cedar Rapids; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Louie; stepson, Creg Waterhouse; sister-in-law, Connie; and niece, Shelly.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
