Kirk Rockne Shearer, 69, of Elkader, went to heaven on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2015, at Hospice of Mercy in Hiawatha. Celebration of Life: 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, at Palisades-Kepler State Park in Mount Vernon in the grassy area down by the beach. Burial will take place at a later date. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion.
He is survived by his children, Ki (Erin) Shearer and Kristian (Brodie) Shearer; one grandson, Liam Shearer; sister, Jacqueline (Bill) Paeth; brother, Kim (Dixie) Shearer; and many nieces and nephews.
Kirk was preceded in death and well-received by his mother and father, Evelyn and Joseph Shearer; and his sister, Linda Jones.
Kirk was a strong Christian man who loved and cared greatly for his family. He was passionate about cultivating and growing bonsai and teaching others about the art form. He believed in being a good steward of the blessings God had given him and saw His beauty in everything.
After serving honorably in the U.S. Navy, Kirk spent his 35-year career traveling the world with Universal Engineering. In retirement, he started a small shop, The Forest Connection, in McGregor. After which, he remained active in the bonsai community, was a wood worker and an artist.
