Jones, Thomas 'Tom' N.
Thomas “Tom” N. Jones, 79, died peacefully Friday, Aug. 31, 2012, at Mercy Hospice. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, with the Very Rev. Rudolph Juarez officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be in the old section of St. Joseph's Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, where a rosary will be recited at 4 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.
Tom was born April 23, 1933, in Walker, Iowa, the son of Leslie and Mary Neal Jones. He was raised in Williamsburg. In 1943, the family moved to Iowa City, where Tom graduated from St. Patrick's High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. On Nov. 10, 1956, Tom married Patricia Bayless at St. Patrick's Church. Tom was a union crane operator with Operating Engineers Local 234, retiring in 1996.
He was a lifelong member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the Roy Chopek American Legion Post. Tom liked the outdoors, especially time spent fishing and traveling.
Survivors include his loving wife, Pat of Iowa City; their three sons and five grandchildren; Chris (Cindy) Jones of West Branch and children, Taylor and Ryan, Tim Jones of Iowa City and his son, Evan, and Mike Jones of Iowa City and children, Avery and Megan; his sisters, Peg Day of Marshalltown and Cari Malone of Iowa City; nieces and nephews; and his brotherhood of union carpenters, iron workers and crane operators.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Joan Soucek and Janet Thompson.
