Iowa G Adam Gettis on Reese Morgan moving to defensive line coach: 'Oh my gosh'
Feb. 23, 2012 11:09 am
INDIANAPOLIS - Former Iowa guard Adam Gettis was shocked when he found out offensive line coach Reese Morgan shifted to the defensive line as part of Iowa's coaching shuffle.
"Oh my gosh," Gettis said today at the NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium. "I'm not a big fan of it, but you've got to do what's best for the team. I believe that's what he's doing. He's a great coach. He's brought through linemen such as Julian Vandervelde, (Marshal) Yanda, those guys. I know he's going to do that for our D-line."
Gettis said he respects Morgan as a teacher and how he helped him develop into a second-team all-Big Ten guard in 2011. Gettis also said Brian Ferentz will be a good addition as Iowa's new offensive line coach.
"When (Morgan) gets after you, he gets after you," Gettis said. "But he's a real cool, calm, collected guy if you're doing the right thing. He's going to bring a lot of talent to that side of the ball. There's going to be a lot of learning done for the D-line, and there's going to be a lot of teaching done. That's going to help us overall.
"(Brian Ferentz) came and talked to us all the time. I've been there five years, so he's been in and out of the building like all the time. I believe that's a great pick for the offensive line coach. The older guys were saying that if anybody would come in and be the offensive line coach, it would be Brian Ferentz. That's what we truly believe.
"(Brian Ferentz) likes to yell and get after guys a little bit more than Coach Morgan, but that's a good thing. It only helps make you better."
Ferentz, son of head coach Kirk Ferentz and a former Iowa team captain at center, left his job as New England Patriots tight ends coach to join the Hawkeyes.
Gettis, who stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 280 pounds, was one of three Iowa offensive linemen participating in drills, medical exams and interviews the invitation-only combine. Gettis has been training in Arizona this offseason and said he's completely healthy.
Gettis said the techniques and fundamentals he learned at Iowa will help him transition to the next level.
"I think I've got a little bit of speed that people don't think I have," he said. "So I'd like to show off my speed a little bit."
He met with most of the teams and said "none of the questions were too over the top."
"I say the hardest question I got was how long have you been dating your girlfriend?" he said, laughing. "I guess, that's probably the worst one I've got so far."
So, how long?
"It's been five years."
