Berger, Katherine E.
Katherine E. Berger, 98, of Oelwein, formerly of Sumner, died Tuesday afternoon, May 8, 2012, at Oelwein Health Care Center in Oelwein. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial: 9 a.m. Saturday, May 12, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. Harry Koelker officiating. Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein. Parish Scripture Service: 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Interment: Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein, Iowa.

Katherine Eloise Finch was born Jan. 4, 1914, at Fairbank, Iowa, the daughter of Wilbur and Marie (Garber) Finch. She received her education from the rural Fairbank schools. Katherine was united in marriage to Thomas Joseph Berger on Sept. 15, 1950, at Toledo, Iowa. Tom and Katherine lived at Hazleton and then moved to a farm near Sumner in 1963.
Katherine was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking and all her domestic chores. Her home and her garden were both always kept neat and tidy. Katherine and Tom were very social and enjoyed many times visiting and playing cards with their friends. Katherine was also a waitress at the Center Valley Restaurant for several years. Katherine and Tom lived on the farm until they moved to Oelwein Health Care Center in 2003. Katherine was previously a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fayette and was currently a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein.
Katherine is survived by her five children, Bob (Ellen) Kimball of Evergreen, Colo., Marlene Moeller of Iowa City, Connie Destival of Panama City, Fla., Shirley (Bob) Jones of Des Moines and Mary (Larry) Hiemes of Arlington; 33 grandchildren; 66 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Pauline Smith of Oelwein.
Katherine was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Tom on Sept. 28, 2007; four sons, Tommy Berger, Charlie Berger, Jack Kimball and Don Kimball; a great-grandson, Brent Thomas; daughter-in-law,: Mary Kimball; son-in-law: Ken Moeller; four brothers; and a sister.
