Smith, Charles Alfred
Charles Alfred Smith, 94, entered eternal peace on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, at the Newman Catholic Student Center, with Father Ed Fitzpatrick officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Newman Center. Family graveside services will be held at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Arrangements are with Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service.
Charles, better known as Charlie, was born Jan. 22, 1918, in Coralville. He was a graduate of University High School and received his bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa in 1940. Charlie married Dorothy Parden on Oct. 18, 1941.
For many years Charlie and his family lived in Waterloo, where Charles was employed at Rath Packing Co. for 42 years. Following his retirement they returned to Iowa City, the home of their beloved Hawkeyes. Charles was proud to serve as an ambassador at the University of Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame. He attended his first Iowa Hawkeye football game in 1930 and continued that tradition for 80 years.
Survivors include his loving wife of 71 years, Dorothy; was the proud father of Steve (Mary) Smith of Iowa City, Ann (Ron) Tack of Marion and Liz (Terry) Lynch of Milwaukee; grandfather of Jean, Tom, B.J., Andy, Mark, Kate, Ellie and Mike; six great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cherished friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Louise Smith; and two brothers, Ralph and Edward.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to Systems Unlimited or to the Newman Catholic Student Center.
