Gertrude Janett, 94, died peacefully Sunday, Nov. 2, 2014, at Rock Ridge Residential Care Center in
Shellsburg. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, at Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Vinton, with the Rev. Mark C. Urlaub officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton and an hour before services at the church on Wednesday. Burial will be in the Garrison Cemetery.
Gertrude Jessie Janett was born Sept. 3, 1920, in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Jens and Meta Stoll Petersen. She was raised and attended school in Maquoketa. On Feb. 14, 1943, she married Paul Janett in Maquekota. He preceded her in death Sept. 30, 1995. The couple lived in Vinton and Manchester, retiring in 1980, and moving to rural Garrison.
Gertrude was a longtime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where she was an active member of the Lutheran Church Women and the church quilting group. She also volunteered at Virginia Gay Hospital Annex for many years.
She is survived by her daughter, Paulette (Terry) Henkle, Garrison; her son, Steven (Nancy) Janett, Corpus Christie, Texas; her sister, Elsie Kokemuller, Davenport; brother-in-law, Robert Janett, Denison; sister-in-law, Charline Petersen, Maquoketa; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Alvin; and sister, Mildred Rohlfs.
Memorials may be directed to Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
