A female pedestrian suffered "significant injury" when she was was hit by a Music and Theatre route Cambus this morning near the corner of Washington and Madison streets, near the east side of the Main Library in Iowa City.
The 20-year-old woman, who has not yet been identified, had entered the crosswalk when she was hit at 10:09 a.m. today.
She was conscious when first responders arrived at the scene at 10:11 a.m., police said.
On-scene authorities say the bus was southbound on Madison Street when the woman was hit.
The impact cracked the bus's windshield, and the woman ended up underneath the bus. She was taken by ambulance to University Hospitals in Iowa City.
Police are investigating to determine if the male driver was able to see the woman prior to the accident. No charges have yet been filed, Iowa City Police Sgt. Mike Lord said.
Cambus Manager Brian McClatchey says that all Cambus drivers are trained about what to do if an accident occurs, and the driver involved in this morning's accident did what he was supposed to do.
"Drivers must immediately contact dispatch with their radio so that the office can contact the appropriate agencies, stop their bus and see if anyone needs assistance," McClatchey said.
According to McClatchey, Cambus accidents involving pedestrians statistically happen less than once a year and serious injuries as a result of such accidents are even more rare.
Cambus management will also look into this morning's accident to determine whether it was avoidable by the driver. Disciplinary actions will be taken if the driver is determined to have been negligent, he said.
