Lela Jean Carte-Kohl, 82, passed away Friday, Feb. 24, 2017, at her home in Atkins. Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, at Cedar Hills Community Church, Cedar Rapids. Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, at the church. Burial: Montrose Cemetery, Montrose, Iowa, at a later date. Arrangements by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Lela was born July 13, 1934, in Fort Madison, Iowa, the daughter of Robert and Eula (Barnes) Knight. She graduated from Donnellson High School in 1952 and then attended Iowa State University in Ames. In 1953, Lela married Clifford Carte. The couple later divorced. Lela worked for Merchants National Bank in Cedar Rapids, H&R Block, and retired in 1996 from Amana Refrigeration in Amana. On Aug. 31, 1996, Lela married Emery "Vern" Kohl in Atkins.
Lela enjoyed collecting giraffe figurines, bowling and square dancing. She was a faithful member of Cedar Hills Community Church for 50 years. Lela loved to dote on her grandchildren.
Lela is survived by her five children, Dennis (Pam) Carte of Green City, Mo., David (Kris) Carte and Cathy (Dan) Vollbrecht, both of Atkins, Karen (Joe) Jackson of Lathrop, Mo., and Kevin (Barb) Carte of Williamsburg; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, Darrell (Patty) Knight of Donnellson; and her best friend of many years, Vera Wilkinson of Cedar Rapids.
Lela was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Eula Knight; her husband, Vern Kohl; two grandchildren; and an infant sister, Naomi Beth Knight.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to Camp Courageous, 12007 190th St., Monticello, IA 52310.
