Barber, Corinne Scott
Corinne Scott Barber, 90, formerly of Wellman, passed away Monday, Aug. 12, 2013, at Oaknoll Retirement Residence in Iowa City where she had lived for the past seven years.
Corinne was born in Boone, Iowa, on Jan. 6, 1923, the daughter of Joshua and Matilda (Foes) Scott. She graduated from Boone High School in 1941, where she was homecoming queen. She married her high school sweetheart, Stanley Barber, on Jan. 26, 1946. Following their marriage, they attended Grinnell College together, graduating in 1949. In January 1951, Corinne and Stan moved to Wellman when the Barber family purchased the Wellman Savings Bank. Corinne was vice president and director of the bank. More importantly, she was a great support to Stan as he ran the bank and served as president of the Independent Bankers Association of America. Corinne devoted her life to her family and always put their needs above her own. Nearly every summer afternoon she entertained neighborhood children and friends in her family's backyard swimming pool. She enjoyed cooking, needlepoint and knitting and she was most pleased to help her granddaughter, Amanda, learn to knit. Friends were a very important part of Corinne's life. Even though she was not a coffee drinker, she enjoyed inviting friends and neighbors to coffee gatherings around her dining room table. She especially liked doing so at Christmastime because she loved decorating for Christmas. She was a 50 year member of the Asbury United Methodist Church, member of PEO Chapter HI in Iowa City and she was active in community groups in Wellman in earlier years.
Corinne is survived by her husband, Stan of Iowa City; her daughter, Ann Doyle and her significant other, Daniel Collins of Coralville; and her son, Scott and his wife, Tonya, and their children Amanda and Charles of Fort Collins, Colo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, her sister and her son-in-law, Daniel Doyle.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 16, at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Wellman. The Rev. Moody Colorado and the Rev. Rich Pippert will officiate. Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman.
Memorial contributions can be made to Mercy Hospital Foundation, Mid-Prairie Foundation, Oaknoll Foundation and Iowa City Hospice.
