Nissen, Ruby J.
Ruby J. Nissen, 72, of 229 Paddock Circle, Iowa City, died peacefully at her home on Friday, Feb. 19, 2010. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice in memory of Florence and Priscilla Schroeder.
Ruby was born Sept. 21, 1937, in Hampton, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Florence (Dannen) Schroeder. Growing up in Sheffield, Iowa, Ruby graduated from Sheffield/Chapin High School, class of 1955. On March 30, 1958, Ruby married Robert D. Nissen in Sheffield. The family moved to Iowa City in 1961.
Ruby was a child care provider for 37 years, caring for over 50 children in her home, retiring in 1997. Ruby had the gift for remembering all of “her kids” and keeping track of their many accomplishments. When their paths would cross, Ruby often recalled fond memories of their childhood.
Ruby was an avid angel and doll collector. Her greatest collection however were her grandchildren whom she proudly bragged about. She often attended their many activities.
Ruby enjoyed weekly gatherings with her many friends at Saddlebrook and the monthly potlucks. She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, Bob; daughters, Kim Nissen of Iowa City and Patty Kennedy of Washington, Iowa; a son, Mike (Shari) Nissen of Freeport, Ill.; grandchildren, Dustin, Brian, Ali, Annie, T.J., LaShawna, Natoshia, Shane and Tyler; and brothers and sisters, Lawrence (Mildred) Schroeder of Sheffield, Delbert Schroeder of Marion, Rebecca (Larry) Tull of Sheffield, Ruth (Stacy) Redmond of Mason City and Edward (Laura) Schroeder of Hampton.
Ruby was preceded in death by her parents and sister-in-law, Priscilla Schroeder.
