Evelyn M. Highley, 85, of Cedar Rapids, died at her home on Friday, Jan. 6, 2017. Services are at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Survivors include four sons, Roy (Emiko) of Jefferson, Iowa, Charles of Maquoketa, and Brice and Mark, both of Cedar Rapids; a daughter, Ellen (Pete) Tusher of Vinton; four sisters, Irene Suckow, Doris Potts, Jackie Bernsden and Opal Goeke; two brothers, John and Sidney (Lila) Smith; seven grandchildren, Lt. Aaron, Maj. Vincent, Maj. Oliver, Kumiko and Trent Highley, Adam Spilman and Angie (Billy) Howie; and great-grandchildren; Arne, Sakura and Soren Kvaal, Ezekiel, Malachi and Micah Spilman, and Rayshon Price.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one sister, Susan Smith; and a brother, Ivan Smith.
Evelyn was born Nov. 3, 1931, in Postville, the daughter of Leonard and Frances Koons Smith. She married Roy L. Highley on Jan. 17, 1948, in Waukon. Roy passed away in 2015.
After graduating from Kirkwood's horticultural program, Evelyn worked at Barlow's Foods, retiring from there as manager of its floral department.
She enjoyed gardening, working on her farm and quilting. Evelyn was a member of the Cactus Club and was a very talented and gifted artist.
Evelyn was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother, whose memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved her.
A memorial fund has been established.
