Becker, Bernice M.
Bernice M. Becker, 90, of Watkins, died Jan. 10, 2012, following an extended illness.
Born March 8, 1921, in rural Watkins, she was the child of Charles and Kathryn Schmuecker. Her younger years were spent on farms in the Watkins and Van Horne area. She married George J. Becker on Nov. 15, 1939. Her married life was spent on a farm in the Watkins area.
She was a member of St. Patrick's Church in Watkins. Her sewing, gardening and excellent cooking skills were a source of pride and joy in her life.
Survivors include sons, James (Sue) of Newhall and Thomas (Amy) of Watkins; and daughter, Glenice (Gary) Peck of Clive. There are nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren in the extended family. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Dorothy and Mary Becker, Sister Mary Ann Becker OSM of Cedar Rapids and Sister Marlys Becker OSF of Sioux City.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George; parents, Charles and Kathryn; and her brother, Joseph. She was also preceded in death by a daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Herbert Kearns; grandson, Roger Kearns; and granddaughter, Gwendolyn Rumbo.
Visitation to be held Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. Patrick's Church in Watkins, with vigil services to be conducted at 7 p.m. at the conclusion of the visitation. A mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Brian M. Dellaert officiating. Burial will be at St. Patrick and St. Paul Cemetery near Watkins.
The family would like to thank the staff of West Ridge Care Center for their compassionate care of Bernice during her stay there.
