Barbara June (Gregory) Mahaffa of Iowa City passed away Sunday, Feb. 28, 2016, in her home. As per her wishes, a graveside service will be at a later date in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Moweaqua, Ill.
Barbara was born Oct. 29, 1932, in Moweaqua, Ill., to Richard Earl and Freda Loree (Roach) Gregory. She graduated from Moweaqua High School in 1950, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Millikin University in Decatur, Ill., in 1954 and a master's in child development at Rockford College in Rockford, Ill., in 1974. She was a kindergarten teacher for most of her career at Brookview Elementary School in Rockford, Ill. She married Roy Mahaffa in 1957 and lived in Rockford, Ill., for 50 years before moving to Iowa City in 2007.
Barbara is survived by her son, Gregory (Mary) Mahaffa of Iowa City; daughters, Julia (Randy) Gates of Tucson, Ariz., and Sarah (Kevin) Miller of Camano Island, Wash.; and grandchildren, Elizabeth and Maggie Mahaffa and Aida and Forrest Miller.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Roy C. Mahaffa Jr.; and her parents, Richard Earl and Freda Loree (Roach) Gregory.
Barbara was a member of Centennial United Methodist Church while in Rockford and St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Iowa City. She participated in many volunteer organizations and was an active member of her church.
She was a fun, loving and compassionate person who will be missed dearly by her family and friends.
Memorials may be made to St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Iowa City, Centennial United Methodist Church in Rockford or to Iowa City Hospice.
