Long, Wayne L. 'Shorty'
Wayne L. “Shorty” Long, 84, of Marion, died of natural causes on Wednesday, April 6, 2011, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, surrounded by his loving family. Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, April 9, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial: Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion.
Survivors include four daughters, Dorene (Dean) Bruce of Marion, Vicki (Curt) Edinger of Tucson, Ariz., Laurie (Mark) McCormack of Atkins and Lisa (Brian) Mallie of Martelle; a very close family friend, Kay DeLong; a brother, Kenneth (Helen); six sisters, Ethel, Mildred, Claribel, Mary Ellen, Eleanor and Barbie; a sister-in-law, Darlene; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; a brother, Laverne; and a special friend, Inez Atwater.
Shorty was born May 4, 1926, the son of James and Elsie (Goodall) Long in Tipton and graduated from Tipton High School. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict in Virginia as a MP. On Sept. 13, 1951, he married Dorothy E. Wehde. They were married for 43 years. Shorty worked for Rathje Construction for 34 years, retiring in 1995.
Shorty was a member of American Legion Post 298 of Marion. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, and boating but especially spending time with his family.
A memorial fund has been established in memory of Shorty.
