Dory was born March 18, 1927, in Johnson County, Iowa, the daughter of Robert and Jessie (Sherman) Madden Sr. She grew up in the Tiffin area and graduated from high school. Dory received her teaching credentials from the University of Iowa in 1949 and spent a lifetime sharing her passion as a media specialist to elementary school children. During her career, she taught in numerous schools, including 10 years in Sigourney and 55 years in the Iowa City Community School District. Dory continued to return to work each school year until just three years ago when her health forced her to retire at the age of 88.

Dory is survived by her nephew and niece, Jim and Becky Madden of Cedar Rapids; her great-nieces and nephews, Tiffany, Debbie, Brett and BJ; and a host of treasured colleagues and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Mary Madden.
