Metz, Zelda Faye
Zelda Faye Metz, 89, of Spencer and formerly of Tama, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at the St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer. Funeral Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Living Faith United Methodist Church in Tama with Pastor Jerry Avise-Rouse officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Tama. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.
Zelda was born on July 25, 1920, in Dysart, the daughter of Arthur and Rosamond (Johnston) Keidel. She graduated from Dysart High School in 1937 and Iowa State Teachers College in 1941. She later completed a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Northern Iowa. Zelda taught elementary school in Titonka, La Porte City, Tama and Gladbrook schools before retiring.
On July 3, 1949, she was united in marriage to Glenn H. Metz at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Glenn and Zelda made their home on the Metz Century Farm, southeast of Tama. Zelda later moved to Tama and eventually to Spencer to be closer to family.
She was a lifetime member of the Tama Living Faith United Methodist Church where she was actively involved with the Women's Circles. She was a member of the Oak Hill Cemetery Association and the Tama Federated Women's Club. Zelda always enjoyed getting together with family and friends. She had a love of reading, playing cards and board games and was especially proud of the accomplishments of her grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Arthur and Rosamond Keidel; her husband, Glenn, of 45 years; her brother, Albert Keidel; her sisters, Dorothy Elliott and Lucille Jaspers; and a niece, Nancy Elliott Shatzer.
Zelda is survived by three children, Ronald (Julie) Metz of Cedar Rapids, Diane (Dennis) Spooner of Spencer and Kirk (Shelli) Metz of Slater; seven grandchildren, Christopher Metz and Ashley Metz of Cedar Rapids, Amanda (Matt) Bemer of Logan, Utah, Amy (Kirk) Johnson of Vinton, Eric (Jill) Bidwell of Marshalltown, Melissa (Brian) Bauer of Polk City and Kim (Mario) Murillo of Union, Mo.; two stepgranddaughters, Angela (Craig) Derby of Cambridge and Jennifer (Mitch) Prashak of Ankeny; six great-grandchildren, Karson and Amiah Johnson, Sofia Murillo, Jackson Bidwell, Isabella Bauer and Daphne Bemer; four nephews; and two nieces.
A memorial fund has been established.
