Irvin, David E.
David E. Irvin, 65, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, succumbed to his long fight with cancer on Feb. 27, 2010. Services, with Masonic rites: 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Leonard Ranson. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday before the service at the funeral home.
David was born June 21, 1944, in Los Angeles, Calif., to Arthur and Jennetta (Goodall) Irvin. His family later moved to Cedar Rapids. He was a 1963 graduate of Jefferson High School. In 1964, he married Evelyn McGowan. After 22 years they divorced. He worked for the Rock Island Railroad until it went out of business. He later proudly owned and operated Dave's Maintenance for many years until he retired. He was a Past Master of Mizpah Lodge AF & AM and a member of the Scottish Rite. Dave also enjoyed a monthly breakfast with a group of former Rock Island workers and people who loved railroading. He enjoyed working in the yard and projects in the garage. He especially loved his time with family and friends.
David is survived by his brother, Ronald of Cedar Rapids; his two children, David A. Irvin of Cedar Rapids and Wendy (Kevin) Grendler of Coggon; his five grandsons, Brandon Halstead, Joseph (J.D.) Dean, Kevin, Wesley and Austin Grendler; his longtime companion, Mildred Voelker; her sons, Andrien (Barb) and Aaron (Janet) Choplick; her grandchildren, Adam, Ryan, Laura, Samantha, Christian and Cynthia; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Irvin; his mother, Jennetta, and stepfather, Claude Anderson; his brother, Art (Robbie) Irvin; and his sisters, Dixianna Ulrich, Jacqueline Phillips and Pamby Wingett.
