Iowa football's 2018 recruiting class gained another big body Wednesday when Mishawaka, Ind., tight end Anthony Torres tweeted his commitment to the Hawkeyes.
Torres is listed 6-foot-6, 235 pounds and a 3-star recruit by Rivals. He visited Iowa on Wednesday, according to HawkeyeReport.com, and pledged to Kirk Ferentz and company over offers from Indiana, Cincinnati, UCF and a host of other Group of 5 and FCS programs.
'I couldn't be more blessed to be where I am at today,” Torres wrote. 'It has truly been an amazing journey and I can't wait to see what God has in store for me.
'After long and careful thought and consideration with my family, mentors, coaches, and friends, I am more than excited to announce that I am committed to the University of Iowa! Go Hawkeyes!”
Torres is a bit of a unique prospect for the Hawkeyes in that he plans to spend his senior season at IMG Academy, a boarding school in Bradenton, Fla., then graduate in December and enroll early at Iowa. The South Bend Tribune has more on that here.
'I don't want to be one of those kids that decommits and goes someplace else,” Torres told the Tribune before his commitment.
Torres played for Indiana Class 6A powerhouse Penn the last three years – a program that has won six straight conference titles and was 36-4 in Torres' first three years. He caught 11 passes for 197 yards and a touchdown at Penn last season, according to the Tribune.
'For me, it was best for my development and what I want to achieve in college,” Torres told the Tribune about his decision to play for IMG. 'Just going down there and competing against the best players in the nation is intriguing to me.”
IMG will be on national TV on Saturday, Aug. 26, when it faces Chandler (Ariz.) at 9:30 p.m. central on ESPNU.
Torres is the 11th commit in Iowa's 2018 class and second tight end, though Green Bay, Wis., TE Jack Plumb projects as an offensive lineman in college. Torres follows Plumb Oswego, Ill., DT Noah Shannon (July 4), Plumb (June 26) and Balsam Lake, Wis., OL Cody Ince as recent commits for Iowa.
