Joel Warren Ludvicek, 88, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014, at Manor Care in Cedar Rapids following a long illness. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, at Cedar Memorial West-side Chapel. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. Deacon Jim Berger will officiate at the service. Burial will be at Czech National Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Military rites by American Legion Post 727.
Joel Ludvicek was born May 11, 1926, in Hawkeye, Iowa, the son of Joe and Carrie Billings Ludvicek. After graduating from Hawkeye High School, Joel entered the U.S. Army and served during World War II in the European Theater in the 16th Infantry Division.
Joel owned and operated Star Vending Service for many years in Cedar Rapids.
Joel was an avid golfer, hunter and coin collector. He recorded two holes-in-one, the last one receiving national attention at a time in his life when he was legally blind.
He is survived by his cousin, Ella Samek of Cedar Rapids; and second cousins, Richard, David and Howard Samek.
He was preceded in death by his parents and half sister, Marie Chandler.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Camp Courageous or Kirkwood Foundation Pet Adoption Program.
