The second/third grade classroom at Harrison Elementary took on a new look at the end of the school year thanks to the creative efforts of students.
As the culmination of a habitat study unit, the students turned the classroom into a rainforest! The annual science unit also integrated concepts of reading, writing, and technology.
“The students had learned about the wetlands and about plant and animal structures during the spring, so we compared and contrasted the wetlands with the rainforest,” explained Connie Ripley, teacher. “Each student chose a rainforest animal to research using print and internet resources. They wrote reports and published them on the computer. They also made display boards incorporating word art and clipart.”
The class then worked together to build a model of the Amazon Rainforest in a corner of the classroom and invited family members to an open house after school.
