Alice M. (Ries) Olberding, 93, of Dyersville, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016, surrounded by her family at Oak Crest Manor in Dyersville. Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville where a vigil service will be held at 3 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday, January 21, before funeral services. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville with burial in St. Boniface Cemetery, New Vienna. Officiating will be the Rev. Jeff Dole. The Rev. Carl Ries will concelebrate.
Alice was born Sept. 8, 1922, in Petersburg, Iowa, the daughter of Francis and Eleanore (Fangmann) Thole. She married Elmer A. Ries. Together they raised five children until his death in 1953. She continued to raise her family and ran the farm. Later Alice married Richard Olberding on Aug. 19, 1967, in New Vienna. He also preceded her in death.
Surviving are five children, Francis (Pam) Ries of Dubuque, Sharon (Bob) Demmer of Dundee, Elaine (Carl) Burkle and Eldon (Patti) Ries, both of Dyersville, and Elmer (Carla) Ries of New Vienna; 22 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Viola (Irvin) Klosterman of Manchester and Rita Mae (Floyd) Feldmann of Edgewood; and in-laws, Clarinda Thole of Manchester, Bernice Thole of Dyersville, Mabel Kronlage of Monticello, Gene (Darlene) Olberding and Jim (Katie) Olberding, both of Dyersville, Grace (Donald) Hermsen of Luxemburg and Shirley Olberding of Dyersville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Elmer, in 1953; her second husband, Dick, in 2007; two grandsons, Ryan Ries and Jeff Ries; five brothers, Lawrence, Francis, Charles and Alfred Thole and Linus (Bernadine) Thole; one sister, Mary Ann (Fred) Wessels; in-laws, Clete Feldmann, Nettie (Paul) Pitz, Joe (Armella) Ries, Matt (Julia) Ries, Don (Esther) Ries, Louis Kronlage and George Olberding,
