Mary Ellen Jones was born Nov. 21, 1932, in Jonesboro, Tenn., the daughter of Montgomery and Maude (Barnes) Jones. As a child the family moved to Iowa, where they settled near Atalissa. Here she attended and graduated from high school in 1950. On Aug. 24, 1951, she married Richard W. “Dick” Fischer in Davenport. In 1953, the couple moved to Iowa City, where they raised their family, and, for over 25 years she worked for the City of Iowa City in parking services.
She and Dick enjoyed their RV, traveling the country for over 13 years after Dick's retirement from Iowa-Illinois Gas & Electric in 1986.
Mary Ellen was an avid reader, loved doing crossword puzzles, playing computer games, cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes, and spending time with her family, especially when it meant going out to eat, not having to do dishes or cook!
Her family includes her three children: Corinne “Corky” Martin and her husband, Dennis, of Wellman; Steven Fischer of Prescott, Ariz.; and Richard Fischer Jr. of Iowa City; granddaughter, Nicole Siedenberg; and Mary Ellen's sister, Nobie Spice and her husband, Don.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother, Paul Eibeck.
