Kinney, Ellen L. Malloy

Ellen L. Malloy Kinney, 91, of Coralville, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, at Country View Senior Residence in North Liberty. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, with the Rev. Rudolph Juarez officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City, where a rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or St. Patrick's Building Fund.

Ellen was born Oct. 17, 1918, near Holbrook, the daughter of John and Mary Jones Malloy. She was a graduate of Parnell High School and had attended Iowa State Teachers College (UNI). On May 1, 1943, she married Edwin Kinney at St. Michael's Church in Holbrook. Eddie died in 1997.

Ellen taught in country schools in Iowa and Johnson counties for eight years, and then was employed at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, retiring in 1982. Ellen and her husband lived in Iowa City from 1943 to 1996 and then moved to Coralville. She was a member of St. Patrick's Church and the VFW Auxiliary.

Family was most important in Ellen's life. She especially enjoyed family gatherings. Ellen liked to quilt, crochet, read, do needlework and follow the Chicago Cubs.

Ellen is survived by nine children and 20 grandchildren: Barbara “Ellen” (Tom) Roan and their children, Katy (Rich), Marty (Lee) and Michael (Amber), and Mary (Richard) Craig and their sons, Dan (Tina), Matt and Travis (Autumn), all of Iowa City; Marguerite (Tom) Hunzinger and their children, Jason (Kathy) and Erika (Adam) of Racine, Wis., Beth Anne (Mike) Montgomery and their sons, Chad and David (Lori); Ed (Connie) Kinney and their children, Jessica, Steve, Sarah and James; and Fran (Ray) Dolezal and their children, Rachel, Meredith (Joe), Noah and Molloy, all of Iowa City; Mark (Lynne) Kinney and their daughters, Emily and Allison, of North Liberty; William Kinney of Albuquerque, N.M., and John Kinney of Ames; 22 great-grandchildren; her siblings, Mary (Alfred) McDonald of Iowa City and Leonard (Katherine) Malloy of Pasadena, Calif.; ad nieces and nephews.

Ellen was preceded in death by her husband; and siblings, Gerald, John, William, Vincent and James Malloy and Rita Lower.
