Gilbert Edward Klein
Gilbert “Gib” Edward Klein, 83, of Cedar Rapids, peacefully passed away at his home on Oct. 30, 2010, following a lengthy illness. He was surrounded by his loving family. Visitation will be Monday, Nov. 1, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, 4200 First Ave. NE, with a vigil service at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, Hiawatha, with visitation one hour before the Mass. A luncheon will follow. He will be buried at St. Francis Cemetery in Dyersville.
Gib Klein was born July 13, 1927, to John and Clara (Schmitt) Klein. Gib grew up on a dairy farm in rural Elk Grove Township, near Cuba City, Wis., the youngest son of 14 children. He attended grade school at “the little red school house,” close to the family farm. He then attended Cuba City High School. In 1950, he earned a B.A. degree in philosophy from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
Gilbert married Marilyn “MaryLou” Westermeyer of Dyersville, Iowa on Oct. 22, 1952. They were blessed with 58 years of marriage, nine children, 33 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Survivors include Marilyn, Krystal (Dewayne) Rahe, Kevin (Brenda), Michele (Paul) Ray, Dana (John) Miller, Chuck (Joni), Rhonda (Jim) Nissen, Ken (Siulin), Jon (Lisa) and Jason (Regina).
Gib and Marilyn are members of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish and former members of St. Pius X Parish. Gib served as a board member for St. Pius X Grade School and Regis High School. He owned Gib Klein Co. for 30 years. In retirement, he volunteered at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids.
His faith and family were his most precious possessions.
We would like to thank Mercy Hospice staff and other caregivers for their love and support.
In lieu of flowers, a Klein Charitable Memorial Fund has been established.
