Newman, Doris J. George
Doris J. George Newman, 89, of Martelle, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009, in St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, from complications due to a fall in her home. Services 11 a.m. Monday at the Martelle, United Methodist Church, where the family will greet friends from 10 until service time. Friends may call Sunday, from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m., at Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices, Mount Vernon Chapel. Burial in Springville Cemetery.
Surviving Doris are her husband of 63 years, Dale, two children: Scott of Cedar Rapids and a daughter Christine (Dan) Emrie of Springfield, Mo.; three grandchildren: Angela (Ryan) McKenna, Curtis Adams, Michael Newman; a step-grandson David Emrie; a half-sister Jean (Dick) Moore; and three half-brothers; Glenn, Don and Larry Katcher.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Nettie Miller George.
Doris was born Feb. 20, 1920, in Kansas City, Mo. She was a graduate of Springville High School and received her Teacher's Certificate from Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls. Doris also attended Cornell College and taught school at Martelle, Ida Grove, Vinton, and Springville. On Feb. 22, 1946, Doris married Dale R. Newman in the Methodist Church in Springville. She was a member of Martelle United Methodist Church, a fifty-year member of Order of Eastern Star, and belonged to Chapter DT PEO. Doris worked for the U.S. Postal Service and was a substitute teacher. Teaching was Doris' passion.
Doris always put others interests above her own, and she will be missed by all.
