James M. Barber, 79, a resident of Willow Gardens, died there Friday, Dec. 4, 2015. Services at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home where friends may call after 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
Survivors include his sister, Margaret Burritt; two nephews, Brian and Jim Burritt, all of California; many cousins from both Iowa and Minnesota; and many dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Jim was born on Nov. 1, 1936, in Lisbon, the son of Harvey and Stella McQuerry Barber. He graduated from Martelle Consolidated School and later received his B.A. from Cornell and his master's from the University of Iowa. Jim was a computer program analyst for the Internal Revenue Service for 30 years, retiring in 1991.
Jim was one-sixteenth Cherokee Indian and believed in Native American values and beliefs. He enjoyed his fishing trips to Minnesota and managing his farm land near Martelle. He traveled extensively both in the United States and abroad, especially to Germany, as Jim spoke fluent German.
Jim was a wonderful son, brother, uncle and friend, whose memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him.
