Rowe, Carroll
Carroll Rowe died after a courageous battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis on Thursday, July 21, 2011, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City at the age of 74 years.
Carroll was born July 29, 1936, in rural Iowa County, Iowa, the son of Edward James and Velma Gladys (Maplethorpe) Rowe. He graduated from North English High School in 1954. On Feb. 14, 1965, he married Joyce Ann Smith in Millersburg. As a child he attended Champion Hill Methodist Church, rural North English.
He enjoyed NASCAR, country music, watching TV, having cocktails with friends and neighbors.
Carroll had an amazing sense of humor and quick wit. No one was immune to his teasing. If he picked on you it meant he loved you. He kept everyone entertained with his jokes until the very end, enabling his family to smile through their tears!
Family was the most important thing to Carroll. He also enjoyed researching a variety of subjects, including history, genealogy and geography on the Internet and had an insatiable thirst for knowledge. He loved attending and participating in classic car shows with his prized 1965 Chevy Impala SS Convertible, woodworking and tinkering in his garage.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce of Williamsburg; a son, Bruce and wife Sharon of Williamsburg; a daughter, Lisa and fiance Joe Pretti of Marion; five grandchildren, Shannon (Steven) Rathjen of Savannah, Ga., Amy (Jeremy) Kaiser of Peosta, Kimberly (JJ) Frahm of Williamsburg, and Kristen (Bill) Bamford and Nick (Stephanie) Pretti, both of St. Louis, Mo.; five great-grandchildren, Morgan and Logan Kaiser, Nyla Frahm and Bill and Finnegan Bamford; and very special nieces and nephews, including Gary (Donna) Rowe of Cedar Rapids and Glenn (Sandy) Rowe of Wellman, Kimberly Rowe of Dallas, Texas and Kathy (Ian) Bradbury of Brighton, Mich.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.
“Life is not measured by the number of breaths that you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.”
Breathe easy now Carroll.
Celebration of Life Memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Williamsburg. Pastor James Parks will officiate. Burial will be in Piersol Cemetery at a later date.
A general memorial fund has been established.
