Charles V. Smith, 72, of 9481 Placid Rd., Epworth, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014, at 7:09 p.m. at Finley Hospital in Dubuque after a sudden illness. Friends and relatives of Charles may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, at Reiff
Funeral Home in Epworth, where a Scripture wake service will be held at 1:30 p.m., the Farley 4-H Wranglers will meet at 6 p.m. and a Knights of
Columbus rosary held at 7 p.m. Services for Charles will be 11:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Epworth, with the Rev.
Michael Schueller presiding. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Epworth, with full military honors afforded by Epworth American Legion John White Post 650.
He was born Dec. 24, 1941, in Epworth, Iowa, son of Charles and Evelyn (Hess) Smith. He was a graduate of Epworth High School. On Sept. 16, 1967, he was united in marriage to Jane Kedley at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Cascade. He farmed in the rural Epworth area and also was employed at Cascade Lumber and Manufacturing in Cascade.
He enjoyed raising Shorthorn cattle, along with spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren.
He was an Army veteran. He was a member of Epworth American Legion John White Post 650, St. Patrick's Parish in Epworth and Epworth Knights of Columbus Council 7823. He was a 4-H
leader for
over 50 years with the Epworth
Eager Beavers and the
Farley Wrangler's Clubs. He later served on the
Dubuque County Extension Council.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Smith of Epworth; three children, Charles (Amy) Smith of Cedar Rapids, Matt (Annette) Smith of Farley and Cathy (Brian) Isley of Mediapolis; six grandchildren, Isaiah, Spencer, Peyton, Mitchell and Owen Smith and Anthony Isley; two sisters, Joan (Tom) Auterman of Cedar Rapids and Cecelia Mattheissen of Topeka, Kan.; two brothers-in-law, Brother Kurt Kedley of Windsor, N.C., and Bruce Kedley (special friend, Sandy Green) of Cascade; and two sisters-in-law, Sharon (Ron) Kueter of Dubuque and Karen (Lyle) Tritz of St. Donatus.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother-in-law, Ron Mattheissen.
