Arland "Josh" S. Bowdish, 95, of rural Central City, passed away Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014, at his home surrounded by his loving family. A funeral service celebrating Josh's life will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, Cedar Rapids, with Lyle Beaver officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories.
Survivors include his children, Norma (Dave) Nietert of Central City, Helen (Marv) Lentner of Blacksburg, Va., Sharon (Bill) Gormley of Cabin John, Md., Karon Fromm of Decorah and Carol (Bill) Bulman of Colona, Ill.; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 12 great- great-grandchildren; and special friend, Marcella Bruns of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, (Mary) Caroline in 1984; daughter, Shirley Schaul; granddaughter, Stephanie Gormley; two sisters, Roxie and Dora; and a brother, Marvin.
Arland Samuel Bowdish was born April 23, 1919, in Central City, Iowa, the son of Clifford and Edna (DeWald) Bowdish. On Feb. 28, 1938, he married Mary Caroline Andersen in Central City. Josh farmed for many years in the Central City area.
He also had worked at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids from 1972 to 1982, and wintered in Texas for over 20 years, with Marcella. They enjoyed dancing and playing cards.
He will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew him.
Memorials may be given in his name to the Springville United Methodist Church.
