Donald A. Herring, 102, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, May 7, 2014, in his home. Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home and after 10 a.m. Monday at the chapel.
Survivors include his son, Robert (Marlys) Herring of Marion; his grandchildren; Zak Herring of Cedar Rapids, Sue (Jim) Brunco of Fort Meyers, Fla., Donald Stewart of Cedar Rapids, James (Christee) of Cedar Rapids and Jennifer Stewart of Cedar Rapids; 12 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; and a great-great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bernice Elizabeth Herring; infant son, James Herring; son, Jack Pope; a brother; four sisters; and grandson, Kevin Blair.
Donald was born July 22, 1911, in Riverside, Iowa, the son of Aurther and Ethel (Buchwalter) Herring. He married Bernice Elizabeth Hill in 1930.
Donald had many jobs, including WPA pipeline, Kinnick Stadium excavation and lawn mowing, Gardner for the Dow's family, and janitor for Grant Wood's Cedar Rapids artists group. He worked for Collins as a groundskeeper, night watchman, machinist and inspector. He retired from Rockwell Collins after 45 years. He then operated his own handyman and snowplow business.
Donald was passionate about Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball. He also enjoyed fishing, traveling, photography and spending time with family and friends.
A memorial fund has been established by the family.
