David "Larry" Miller, 77, passed away on Tuesday, April 10, 2018, at Oaknoll Retirement Residence.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 20, at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Iowa City, with the Rev. William Lovin officiating. The family will greet friends after 9 a.m., prior to the service. Family committal services will be at the Lincoln Township Cemetery in Alleman. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Larry's memory to the Congregational United Church of Christ, the Oaknoll Foundation or to the University of Iowa Kidney Transplant Department. Larry was born on Sept. 17, 1940, in Des Moines, to Dave and Leah Jasper Miller. He graduated from North Polk High School in 1958, where he played on its first school football team. He served in the Iowa National Guard. Larry and Sandy (Matzinger) were high school sweethearts. They were united in marriage on June 8, 1963.
Larry attended McPherson College and Iowa State University, where he majored in electrical engineering. In 1965, Larry and Sandy moved to Iowa City. He enjoyed working in the area of research and development, designing hardware for computers, and was influential in the development of patents. In 1974, while working for Westinghouse, he installed an innovative computer test scanning system at the University of New South Wales in Australia. He traveled to many other countries with work, including Japan, Mexico and China. The last 16 years before his retirement, Larry was an engineer at Fisher Controls in Marshalltown, He often would fly his plane to Marshalltown and loved that experience!
During retirement, he enjoyed travel, card games with friends, his cars, woodworking, constant projects, boating and the Iowa Hawkeyes! He will be remembered by his family as the best husband, father and grandfather ever!
Larry is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sandy, and their two daughters, Laurie (Chris) Harris of Iowa City and Lisa (Kevin) Knighten of Santa Rosa, Calif.; his sister, Joyce (Richard) Carney, and brother, Earl (Linda) Miller; and his four adoring grandchildren, Abbie Dehring, Grace Knighten, Ellie Harris and Henry Harris. He was a loving uncle to many nieces and nephews.
He was as preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Keith.
