Alan Mengler was born on April 15, 1936, to Stanley Mengler and Mildred Mullinex Bamsey in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Following his high school graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He retired as a CWO4 after 35 years. He was united in marriage to Barbra Hurt on Dec. 12, 1959, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Al had worked at Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric, both as a service technician and accountant supervisor in Cedar Rapids and Davenport, Iowa. He retired in January 1995 to spend time with his ailing wife, who passed in April 1995. While living in Walcott, he was on the city council as well as the planning and zoning committee. Following Barbra's illness, Alan moved to Palo. He served on the Palo City Council and was a commander with the Palo Legion for 12 years.
His hobbies included working on his car collection that was up to 42 cars at one time. He enjoyed shooting guns with his brother, Evan, and working on many rental properties and buildings. He will be remembered for his love of animals, upbeat attitude, stubbornness, and his drive to always learn about current events.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Harold J. Mengler of Cedar Rapids, Brian A. (Lisa) Mengler of Walcott and Sherri K. (Vincent) Paez of Maryland; grandchildren, Lindsey (Bryce) Fisher, Tara Wolf, Mindie Bushey, Elisha Mengler, Philip Mengler, Garrett Mengler, Brett Mengler and Allie Mengler; and six great-grandchildren.
Alan was preceded in death by his wife, Barbra; parents, Mildred and Art Bamsey; daughter-in-law, Carol Mengler; and siblings, Orin and Evan Mengler.
