Edwards, Gordon J.
Gordon J. Edwards, 97, of Marion, died peacefully Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Memorial Service: 11 a.m. Friday, March 2, at St. Paul United Methodist Church Chapel, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Harlan Gillespie. The family will greet friends one hour before the service Friday at the church. Private Family Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his children, Sheryl (Arnie) Prosser of Richardson, Texas, Charles (Lora Lea) Edwards and Sally (Carl Hendrickson) Rowley, both of Cedar Rapids; his stepchildren, Colleen (William) Picket of Orlando, Fla., Vicki (Joe) Finkstein of Marion, and Steve (Marlene) LeMont of Fairfax; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including Lisa, John, Eric, Brian, Christopher and Taylor.
He was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 46 years, Maxine; his ex-wife, Camille; and his parents.
Gorde was born March 23, 1914, in Waterville, Kan., the son of Charles W. and Gertrude (Gordon) Edwards. He graduated from high school in Sabetha, Kan., in 1934. Gorde married Camille Smith on Aug. 21, 1934. Together they had three children and later divorced. Camille died in 1973. Gorde married Maxine LeMont on Sept. 23, 1965 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids. He co-owned Burgess & Edwards Printing, which later became Pepco Litho that he ran with his son for many years, retiring in 1980. Gordon enjoyed wintering in Arizona for many years with his wife and their friends. He began his printing career as a teenager at the Sabetha Herald Newspaper and will be remembered as an incredibly talented printer. He also enjoyed woodworking, fishing and golfing at Indian Creek Country Club in Marion, where Maxine often referred to him as “The Little Duffer.”
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy at 315 18th Ave., Hiawatha, IA 52233, in Gordon's memory.
