Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Interment will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Surviving are her daughter, Jerene “Jeri” Thomas of Marion; grandchildren, Jerilynn “Lynn” Thomas (Marty Ortgies) of Anamosa, Joanne “Jo” Marshall (Scott) of Arlington, Texas, and Kevin (Janine) Thomas of Freeport, Ill.; great-grandchildren, Zachary, Emily and Mackenzie Thomas, and Julien, Jordan and Jaedan Marshall; great-great-granddaughter, Gwendalyn Epling; brothers, Edward E. St. Germain of Rohnert Park, Calif., and Ernest D. St. Germain of San Jose, Calif.; as well as several nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her two husbands; a son-in-law, Edwin Thomas; a grandson, Craig Thomas; and brothers, Cecil, Harry and Raymond.
Irene was born Feb. 14, 1916, in Frazee, Minn., the daughter of Ernest and Katherine (Sheeley) St. Germain. She married Gerald A. Cady on Aug. 30, 1936, in Los Angeles, Calif. She and Gerald had one daughter, Jerene. Gerald preceded her in death on Sept. 30, 1958. She married Frank J. Roscoe on April 28, 1962, in Iowa City; he preceded her in death on Dec. 21, 1990. She was employed for 27 years in the Medical Records Department at Mercy Medical Center.
For many years she was a proud member of American Legion Hanford Post 5 Auxiliary, holding every position of leadership, including Linn County president and Second District president. Irene and her husband were regular attendees of American Legion National Conventions. She selflessly donated her time to the many events at the post and the causes it supports. She and other auxiliary members began the program, continued today by her daughter Jeri, of placing thousands of flags on the graves of deceased veterans at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. She was also a member of the Bowling 500 Club and Calvin Sinclair Presbyterian Church. She volunteered on a regular basis at the veterans hospital in Iowa City and made many trips to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.
She will be greatly missed, but forever remembered for her sense of humor and continuous support of the American Legion.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the staffs of Willow Gardens, Hospice of Mercy, and Dr. Thomas Schroeder for their kind care and compassion shown to the entire family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests all donations be made to: The American Legion Hanford Post 5 Auxiliary.
