The May 30 editorial 'Slow down on regents plan” is a much-needed discussion concerning the state Board of Regents change for funding the three state schools.
When I first read the proposal to fund the schools with a much heavier emphasis on 'in-state” students, I felt the Board of Regents did not understand the distinctions among the three schools. Iowa State University, University of Northern Iowa and University of Iowa have distinct differences as well as similarities.
UNI always has served Iowans well as a great institution for preparing teachers and a broad-based undergraduate curriculum. ISU always has been known for its engineering, agricultural studies and veterinary training. The UI long has been known for advanced degrees, the International Writers Program, Iowa Writers' Workshop, medical school and dental school. Each school delivers a strong undergraduate program. When each school branches out into its respective specialties, it necessarily includes a wider variety of students coming from a wider variety of states and countries.
It seems the regents do not have a clear picture of the three state school missions when they want to change the funding method based more heavily on drawing Iowa residents. Yes, we want our Iowa students to attend our Iowa schools. But, we also want to draw national and international attention to our state. I urge the regents to reconsider their funding change. An isolationist approach does not seem advisable.
