Northrup, Sylvester 'Paul'

Sylvester “Paul” Northrup, 74, of Amana, died at his home Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009. Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Teahen Funeral Home, Walford, by Pastor Craig Bex, and military services by the American Legion. Burial: 1:30 p.m., Garrison Cemetery. Friends may visit today after 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Military honors by American Legion Honor Guard Post 727.

Paul is survived by his fiancee, Judy Frieden, Amana; son, Timothy (Tammy) of Killeen, Texas; five daughters, Paula Northrup of Pennsylvania, Conneye Dulin of Cedar Rapids, Veanus (Jim) Hiler of Phoenix, Michelle (Robert) McKnight of Blackshear, Ga., and Angela (Rick) Skersick of Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Vi (Carl) Massey of Lisbon and May Constine of Cedar Rapids; many grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three stepchildren, Mike Draphal of Cedar Rapids, Lisa Glenn of Missouri and Lori Draphal of New Jersey.

Paul was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Judith; infant son, Danny Joe; parents, nine brothers and one sister.

Paul was born July 11, 1935, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Fred and Catherine Zerbe Northrup. He married Judith Raymond on Dec. 24, 1966, in Rock Island, Ill. She died Feb. 28, 2002. Paul served in the Navy from 1953-1957. He worked at Jefferson High School as a custodian.

Paul loved his dog Charlie and being outdoors fishing and gardening. He took pride in having the perfect lawn, music and playing the guitar and singing. He was loved in life and will be missed in death.
