Hermsen throws first big-league inning

Mar. 3, 2013 8:57 pm
First spring training big-league inning, to be specific, for B.J. Hermsen.
The former West Delaware prep threw the bottom of the eighth inning of the Minnesota Twins' 7-2 loss Sunday afternoon to Tampa Bay. The right-hander gave up a two-run home run to catcher Chris Gimenez and struck out two.
Hermsen was the Twins' minor-league pitcher of the year last season and was added to the 40-man big-league roster in the offseason. He is likely to begin the regular season at either Triple-A Rochester or Double-A New Britain.
Former Cedar Rapids Xavier prep Ryan Sweeney is 4-for-17 in six spring-training games thus far for the Boston Red Sox. An outfielder, Sweeney is attempting to make the Sox as a non-roster player.
