Work began on Iowa's only nuclear power plant on June 17, 1970. Construction was completed on March 23, 1974 at a cost of $300 million, almost $200 million over original estimates. The plant entered operation on June 27, 1974 and became commercially operational on February 1, 1975, with a net generating power output of approximately 615 megawatts using a single General Electric Mark I boiling water reactor.
