WASHINGTON - Sen. Bernie Sanders' former presidential campaign manager said the Vermont independent is considering another presidential run.
'Nationally, he is considering another run for the presidency. When the time comes I think we'll have an answer to that. But right now he's still considering it,” said Jeff Weaver, who managed Sanders' 2016 campaign.
Weaver appeared on C-SPAN's 'Washington Journal” to promote his book 'How Bernie Won.” His comments come as Sanders announced he would seek re-election to the Senate.
'The 2018 midterm elections will be a pivotal moment in our country's history and we must fight for an agenda that works for working people,” Sanders said in a statement last week.
Weaver said Sanders' motivation 'is the desire to have a new president in the White House and a heavy consideration is, who is the best person to beat (President Donald) Trump in 2020.”
In his book, Weaver urges Sanders to take another stab at running for president, USA Today reported.
'Bernie is the person best positioned to defeat Trump in 2020. That's my personal view,” he told the newspaper. 'He brings a lot of new voters into the process. He is also incredibly strong with independent voters.”
