DAVID LEE BOGGS
Spring, Texas
David Lee Boggs, 81, of Spring, Texas, died at home on Monday, Aug. 14, 2017.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 1, 2017, at First Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids, with Pastor Steve Knudson officiating.
David is survived by his wife, Darlene Boggs; children, Dan Boggs (Cathy), Lisbon, Iowa, Denise Cook (Keith), Spring, Texas, and Doug Boggs, Novato, Calif.; grandchildren, Daniel Kellogg (Cody), Natalie Stephens (Andrew), Stephanie Boggs, Chace Boggs, Kellen Cook, Kinsey Cook and Kristopher Cook; great-granddaughter, Avaline Kellogg; and many nieces and a nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother; sister-in-law; brother-in-law; and a niece.
David was born on Nov. 19, 1935, to Thomas and Esther Boggs in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He married Darlene Eckerman on July 31, 1955. David attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls.
David started his career as a journeyman plumber and loved the variety of jobs he had, including the nuclear power plant in Palo, Iowa, and his own business in Mount Vernon, Iowa. He ended his career as a building inspector for Linn County, and from 1989 to 1998 he developed and was head of the City of Marion Building Department.
He was an avid sports fan and particularly rooted for the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs. When he moved to Texas, he added the Astros and Texans to his list. He refereed high school and college football and boys' and girls' basketball games.
David was very active in his church, serving on committees as well as doing many hands-on projects as needed. He especially remembered the mission trip in 1968 to Montana. He got enough donated building materials from contractors he knew to fill a semi truck that carried them to the Rocky Boy Reservation, where the group built Sunday School rooms at the mission church. Extra materials were used to help update homes there.
David was a woodworker extraordinaire. He has left many heirlooms for his family. He loved to fish and read historical books. He was active in the Boy Scouts as a dad. David made it a priority to be at every event that involved his children. He loved his wife and children and was very proud of what they have become.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church, 1000 Third Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52403.
